A Website - that’s not for a Small Business Surely?

Monday, July 7th, 2008

One of the great wonders of the World Wide Web is that it is a great leveler. It gives access to millions of people to fantastic information and purchasing potential. Over 250,000 people per month gain access to the web world wide and many of these enter the internet for less than $1,000 a year.

The internet market, thanks to the greater ease of access is surging ahead exponentially. So how is it a leveler? Web pages are presented in virtual space. The browser, or surfer, is not interested in where the company is based or how large it is, all of these are transparent to them. With a visually effective web page a small to medium company can compete with other larger companies.

So

The recipe for an attractive website consists of: a web programming tool, a domain name, a company to host your web, an effective design backed by a good business strategy, some time each month to maintain and update the website and, or course, something to say or sell.

Take care not to economize on your domain name. This is the address that your website is known by. Whilst it may be tempting to take the cheaper option and use the free space offered by most internet package providers, don’t unless your budget is really tight. The web address www.hostsite/yourcompany.co.uk does not look as impressive as www.yourcompany.co.uk . The cost of the latter starts at about $9 per year and hosting your site is about $100 per year. There are free web hosters available but these will subject your visitors to annoying adverts and more importantly - usually poor support.

For your hosting - this involves undertaking an informed choice. To start with, you need simple, reliable hosting. You obviously need email - but I have yet to find a hosting company that does not offer this. Bandwidth - the amount of traffic allowed to get to you site is the most expensive part usually. Think of bandwidth as a water pipe - the bigger it is the more people will be able to see your site. Next you need web logs - which tell you how many people have visited your site, where they came from and what pages they looked at. As you get more proficient - PHP and MySQL would be useful - this is a database and software combination that will help you with put functionality on your web site.

Do a simple search or buy any internet magazine and there are a considerable number of companies that will host your website and offer e-mail forwarding and other goodies. The best way of finding your ideal host company is to detail your requirements and then send them to a few likely companies. The best reply (that you can understand) is the company for you.

Now to the area that puts a lot of people off - the design and build of the website. This is not as difficult as many people think. Templates with simple click and build facilities are readily available or you can visit a web site such as elance or guru and get your site built quite cheaply. The key points to remember are that the web is a visual arena, and users have a very limited attention span. Make the loading of each page quick, especially the first page, which should just fill the screen. You can then offer links to other areas that you want your customers to view. If you want to sell from your site, most credit card merchants now offer shopping carts and easy set up.

Keep changing your web site in order to encourage repeat visits. Add competitions, special offers, jokes or information. Keep adding content - many people visit web sites looking for information.

Now the vital lesson. If you are going to sell on your website then you need the supporting business facilities to support enquiries and the selling and delivery of your products.

You’ve set up your website, now you have to let the world know that you have arrived. There are four ways, in order of effectiveness: Search Engines, Portals, Market Sites and Marketing.

* Search Engines are used by surfers when they want information on a particular subject. Where ever possible, go to “add URL” on each site and follow the instructions. The major search engines usually require a payment on submission. Don’t fall for the top ten listing in Google adverts - it is impossible to guarantee this.
* Portals are groups of like-minded sites that can all be accessed from one major site or portal. Examples are sports information or small business information.
* A Market is a group of merchants, usually grouped geographically or by product or service, who all use a central website to advertise on. Examples are groups of realtors/estate agents, medical services or “Our Town”.
* Marketing can be via banner exchanges, complimentary links, quoting your website on all your correspondence or the most effective of all - pay per click advertising.

Most importantly, before you set your website up, decide what your business strategy is going to be. Are you going to: inform, sell, seek AdSense or similar revenue, or a combination of all three. Make sure that this strategy fits in with the rest of your business. A website can be time consuming but it can also be very rewarding. Good luck.

Multiple Website Hosting - Subdomains are the Answer!

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Many business owners find themselves in a quandary over the ways to make the most of their company’s web site. This is especially true of those who have the need to maintain more than one web site but do not wish to pay for multiple hosting accounts. If this is you, a subdomain may be the answer.

Subdomains are sort of a site within a site. They are not, however, simply additional pages of an existing web site. The subdomain can have a web site all its own, completely separate from the site located at the main domain name.

To understand the use and purpose of subdomains, it may be necessary to first understand the concept of an internet domain name. Every web site that is active on the internet (and there are literally billions of them now - it was estimated as long ago as 1996 that there were more web pages in existence than there were people on Earth) has a unique domain name. There can be only one Ebay dot com, for example, on the entire internet. The domain name, however, is really just a way for humans to relate to the site. Internet servers see web site names as unique I.P. addresses. It is the domain name server that translates those numbers into names and back again.

A subdomain is simply an offshoot of your web site’s domain. In terms of the way it appears on the server, the subdomain is simply a folder or a sub directory located within your domain’s root directory. Any sub directory can serve as a sub domain. For example, if your web site is “www.mycompany.com” and you store the images for your site in a directory called “images,” then you could, if you wished, create a subdomain at “images.mycompany.com”. As long as you put an “index.html” page in the folder you should be able to pull it up in a web browser that way. In most cases you will create a new sub directory to be associated with a subdomain and some web hosts do not support subdomains on their servers or put a limit on the number of subdomains you may associate with your site.

The benefits of using subdomains as opposed to opening multiple hosting accounts are twofold. First, you get the obvious benefit of only having to pay for one hosting account. You also benefit from being able to have a completely separate web site, but one that your customers will easily recognize as being associated in some way with your business. Some companies will set up subdomains for various divisions (xyz.com may also have sales.xyz.com or support.xyz.com) and some will use subdomains for various businesses that are all offshoots of the same parent company.

That association could be a downside to using subdomains as well. If you want to keep the relationship between your companies under wraps (like Disney tried so hard to do with Touchstone Pictures so many years ago), you may want to use multiple accounts rather than subdomains. The web address clandestineproducts.megamall.com would clearly betray that there was some connection between Clandestine Products and Megamall, whether you wanted that information to be known or not.

Real Estate Basics Part 1

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

1.Sales Ability

Is at the heart of almost everything we do in life. From childhood, we are always
selling ourselves and/or our ideas to others. This boils down to our basic
relationships with parents, spouse, employer or friends.
At the end of the day, we are all salesman! Anytime we interact with another person
we are in some way being sold or are selling ideas and concepts!

2. Sales Styles
All of us have definite sales styles. By this I mean each of us has a unique and
individual way in which we interact with people. To illustrate this point, ask
yourselves?
Are we low key or do we come on strong or even pushy? Are we information
gatherers or do we like to improvise or even do both. Are we negotiators and/or
problem solvers?
If you think about it, you’ll realize that in your interactions with people you’ve
encountered all these (and more) different styles.

Extremely Important!
You must know and understand your own individual style and always strive to
improve and capitalize on your strengths. In other words how do you basically
interact with people?
This leads us into our individual personality.
We must always remain true to our basic feelings and values and realize how they
affect our interactions with people.
I’m assuming that if you’ve been successful at sales you already have a style or way
of dealing with people.
Bottom line is that, whatever works for you and you feel comfortable with, you must
stick with it! (Remember I said been successful withif your sales experience has
been negative up to this point, then it’s obviously time to rethink your style and
method)
Ok-So I recognize and agree that I have a style, now what?
Develop it, work on it, and improve it as it defines who you are.

Always-Stay true to yourselves and under no circumstances try to be somebody
you’re not. If you do, be assured that most people will pick up on it immediately and
in the process, you’ll lose esteem instead of gaining it.

Always, always remember that you can achieve incredible success and still remain
the same person you are.
In conclusion if people like you for who you are, and you’ve had a good sales
record, don’t try to reinvent yourself.

3-Sales is a percentage Game!
Depending on how well you do the things we’ve already talked about will determine
what percentage falls your way. Remember batters in the national league are
considered good if they bat 300 or better. (That’s three hits in 10) You cannot win
them all. An Important Premise is, “Only worry about the things you have control
over”

4-Sales is an up and down process.
You will have good days and you will have bad days. Whenever you get into making
good money, I’ve found that the highs are really high and the lows are really low.
Some people cannot handle this in their lives. If that’s the case then you need to
probably work at a job, where you punch a time clock, do the same thing repeatedly
and play it safe. What I’m saying is know that there will be ups and downs and don’t
dwell on it-there’s always tomorrow. One essential way to always stay optimistic is
to-
Get to the point where you honestly believe that you can help your customer better
than anyone else.
Note: To get to the point where you honestly feel you have the most to offer will
take lots of work., but the payoff is immense.
Always keep this goal in mind, as it will point out the approach to take to get there.

5-You cannot get along with everyone.
There are always going to be people you won’t be able to deal or get along with.
I’m sure you’ve run into people that you just couldn’t relate and/or didn’t want to.
Now if the person is really someone you know you can’t deal with then that is one
thing, however the danger here is forming too early an opinion of the other person.
As to that please consider trying the following.

5A-How to turn it around.
A. Keep your opinions from forming (count 10) and then truly try to understand that
person’s motivation, in my experience about half the time that you do this, you can
turn the situation into a positive rather than a negative experience.
B. Please understand that, it’s worth the effort because once you’ve gotten a tough
customer on your side, he’ll be just as tough in favor of you as against you.
Generally if a client is too easy, he’s that way with everyone and in some cases won’t
really commit to anything. He just wants to be a nice guy

If you really try and see that you can’t get something going with the customer, then
let it go. In the business of Real Estate refer him to another agent so you’ll still
make money for your efforts.
We simply cannot please everyone.

Why is Fox News Ratings Slipping?

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Have you considered why lately that FOX News has had their ratings slipping? Well if you will consider that their news segments re-run too much and therefore you only need to watch it for 15-minutes and you got all the news with a conservative slant for the day.

Also consider that the segments of news are down to 3-4 minutes between commercials, which some say is about the attention span of a Nat, or the average US citizens brain really. But there are other reasons as well such as many people are watching better coverage on CNN or staying up on the Weather on the Weather Channel; now the Hurricane Authority, as they have self-proclaimed themselves, perhaps that is apropos for them, but the Weather Channel certainly is not FOX network and if they were smart they would buy them now while they can afford too.

But also FOX news is going over board on there show with stupid lawyer guests. People hate lawyers and yet FOX news casters give them way too much credence. Additionally the fair and balanced concept is hardly balanced, that news media is biased with a conservative slant. Which is fine for me, but even so I wish they would hear some of these liberal guests out more rather then cutting them off all the time? How about you? Consider this in 2006.

Colorado Health Insurance Quotes

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

When purchasing health insurance in Colorado, or in any state for that matter, make sure you do a lot of research on the companies you are considering getting quotes from.

Colorado health insurance agents are helpful and will answer any questions you may have about your policy or the price you have been quoted. You must have a clear understanding of what your quote is paying for in terms of coverage and whether or not your rates can increase, as you get older.

Insurance companies will always give you quotes. You can meet with a representative in person or you can go online and find literally thousands of websites designed to give you all the information you need on health insurance agencies. These sites are set up to give you all the details and sign you up right over the Internet.

An employer usually covers group policies either entirely or partially. Group insurance policies are now much more flexible in admitting members with pre-existing medical conditions. The flexibility is helping members who are not satisfied with the services of doctors in a particular network to go to someone else without a hassle.

In Colorado, individual plans are offered by PacifiCare, Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, United Health Care, Fortis and other companies that have affordable, attractive plans. There is also coverage available for college students. The quotes for this insurance are usually low, because college students are usually healthy. In addition, if you cannot afford health insurance, the State of Colorado can help you.

Colorado Health Insurance provides detailed information on Colorado health insurance, Colorado group health insurance, Colorado health insurance companies, Colorado health insurance plans and more. Colorado Health Insurance is affiliated with North Carolina Individual Health Insurance.
