The single problem I’ve being an ebay vendor and buyer is the way the things are done. Normally we recieve items by means of post when we pay through paypal and pay ebay postage when we buy something. This is the way in which all my purchases have taken place. Until I was trying to find a brand new couch for my new flat.It was hard trying to find the right couch on ebay, you do not get the experience of sitting on it and doing the comfort check but I found a couch on ebay that I had seen in a furnishings shop however could not afford the cost of it in the shop. The cost of that sofa on ebay was lower than half the value as it was displayed in the store so I went to purchase. The only difference was that it came in the ebay collection and in that I had to go and pick up my purchase for myself, they will not deliver it. There was an option to deliver it through a private courier but it was the same worth as that of the sofa.So, I agreed to pick up the purchase as the address of the seller was specified, he also said that it will be good to bring a proper receipt of the purchase and I agreed to pay through paypal as the seller said. I paid the money and we agreed on a date and time for the pick up of my new couch.I was excited, the day of the couch pick up had arrived, I drove about 100 miles to Wrexham and arrived on the address I had been given. When I arrived on the address I got a bit confused because it was looking like a warehouse and the vendor had informed me that it was his residence. It was appearing as if there was no one in the warehouse, still I pressed the buzzer, no one came out, still I waited and kept patient.Nobody turned up as it was looking like, so I called my partner to give me the phone number of the vendor, but the contact details had been deleted and the account was suspended. I had been scammed it was obvious, no couch and including the petrol I was £450 out of pocket.The good news was that because I had paid through Paypal I did have a little security.I loged a dispute complain in paypal and managed to get back my money, however it is very easy for that individual to make a brand new account with some other identify and card number and do the same thing with someone else. I was advised the most effective thing to do with ebay collections is pay on pick up and write out a receipt ready for the seller to sign.

Fake items abound on eBay, and it takes much effort not to be duped by scammers who peddle these wares. There have been many painful stories relating how a seemingly legitimate item turned out to be either fake or defective.

It is possible, however, to avoid these scams if one is careful and vigilant. Buyers should be wary of any purchase over eBay, and should take steps to ensure the authenticity of the item and to make sure the item is in reasonable condition.

Be Vigilant

Buyers should take the initiative by doing plenty of background research. They must learn as much as possible about the products before bidding on them. If the seller provides pictures of an item, they should not be taken at face value. Comparison of these pictures with the real item helps in this regard.

Many sellers will use pictures from manufacturers that do not represent the item they are actually selling; buyers should ask the seller for actual pictures of the item. If the seller balks, buyers should refrain from bidding. Collector?s items, autographed memorabilia, and historical artifacts are common items that are misrepresented on eBay.

Authenticate

Familiarize yourself with the various bodies that certify respective items. For example, reputable merchants of autographed sports memorabilia should include a COA (certificate of authenticity) from a trusted third party. Buyers should make sure they have read the entire product description on its eBay listing. Things to look out for are disclaimers, damages, current item condition, years of use, and others. If this information is not specified, it would do well for the buyer to contact the seller regarding such.

If the price for an item is too good to be true, it probably is. Auctions that carry outrageously low prices should be taken skeptically.
