Dr. Madhav Narayan and Dr. Sean Flor, JCH&L’s newest family physicians who started this fall, both came to JCH&L because they want to serve a rural area as family physicians.
“Having doctors and others advocating for good things helps communities,” Dr Narayan said. “The key to being part of the solution is to be physically present.”
Dr. Flor said he loved the diversity of family medicine and felt it was his calling. He said he knew rural areas needed more family doctors.
“Family medicine is about knowing the whole person and caring about the whole person. It also means knowing how social interactions and family interactions affect the patient’s health,” Dr. Flor said.
Dr. Narayan grew up in Broomfield, CO. From an early age, he knew he “wanted to help people live well.” A rural rotation in Springfield, CO, was a key to deciding on a rural practice. Rural areas may have fewer resources available, and “these are things that physicians need to talk about and advocate for.”
He said he felt responsible for standing up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves. He runs a non-profit organization in India dedicated to community development and people skills development.
He sees the agricultural belt as home to kind and hardworking people.
He said he appreciates that in recruitment efforts, JCH&L has made it clear that they want providers to be happy here and practice medicine the way they think it should be practiced.
He strongly believes in knowing the whole person.
“People don’t want to be sick. It is important to know if something is happening that affects their health,” Dr Narayan said. It is important to him “to help people live the life they want to live”.
He also knows that overall health improvement is not an overnight change.
“We don’t need to reach for the stars today, we just need to do a little better,” Dr Narayan said.
Dr. Narayan began working at JCH&L on September 6. He has joined local Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and looks forward to getting involved in the community. He recently completed his residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, Rural Training Track. He received his MD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He received training in EGD and colonoscopy.
In his spare time, he enjoys baseball and is also a Denver Broncos football fan.
Dr. Flor, originally from Omaha, knows since elementary school that he has two dreams in life: to be a military aviator and, eventually, a doctor.
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought to tick both boxes,” Dr. Flor said.
He said he got into medicine because he liked his pediatrician. But once he entered medical school, he realized that he loved the diversity of family medicine, especially in a rural area, and that he also loved caring for the person. as a whole and his family.
He started his college career in pre-med, but also played football for Marquette. He found he also loved psychology, so he got his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with some pre-medical requirements. He also worked after his college years at the Wisconsin Early Autism Project.
When he graduated from college, as he had always wanted to fly, he spoke to a recruiter from the officer training school. He was sworn into the Air Force in November 2003. The Air Force was a good experience, he said, and very rewarding. He was a Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) on B1-B bombers and had 3 deployments in 4 years in Qatar. He said after 8 years he decided he could still go to medical school and achieve another goal. He took pre-med classes at the American University in Washington, DC, volunteered, and prepared for the MCAT. He worked at the Omaha Veterans Affairs Hospital in clinical research on traumatic brain injury.
UNMC was his first choice for medical school, and he was happy to be selected to study there. He was also selected for his first choice of residency, at the Lincoln Medical Education Partnership.
He said the new clinic was a factor that made Fairbury stand out when he was recruited for family practice positions. He said he also liked the resources available here. He said he was also impressed with the Burkley Fitness Center. The location is good for him to stay close to his family, and still in a rural area. He said he felt the community was friendly and welcoming.
“It all felt like a good fit,” he said.
During his studies and his career opportunities, he lived in cities of all sizes. He said he prefers this size of community. He also wants to get involved in the community and evaluates the many opportunities.
“I can’t wait to be part of the city,” said Dr. Flor. “I am delighted to be here.”
Its goal is “to increase the well-being and health of the community”.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. he also enjoys hunting and entertaining at his family cabin near Ainsworth, NE; as well as athletics, running, keeping fit and being active. He is a huge fan of college athletics and sports in general.
Dr. Flor recently began practicing at JCH&L on October 3, having recently completed his residency with the Lincoln Family Medicine Program. He received his MD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He has training in EGD and colonoscopy.
